Tiny House

Lighting, Smoke Alarms, Carbon Monoxide Detector, Internet & TV Connection & a Weather Station!

I get asked every now and then about my lighting design, TV & internet connections and a few people have wondered what the little gadget by my front door is that they’ve seen in the photos! So I thought I’d chat today about all of the above plus the smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector since they were installed with the other electrics!

I’ve talked briefly before about how much of a difference well chosen lighting can make to any home design! All of the lighting I chose kept to my industrial theme, with wrought iron, wire and glass lights. My power points and light switches are all brushed steel plates, they look fantastic and tie in with the industrial theme so well! Take the time to check out what’s available that’ll suit your design! You’ll discover that there’s so much to choose from! There are specialist lighting stores, we’ve got the ability to purchase online and of course getting inspiration online from photos and lighting websites is a great idea!

It’s a great idea to have your lighting designed and know what you want to put in prior to your electrical wiring being installed…for example, my bathroom has 3 lights that hang above the mirror rather than in the middle of the room and the bedrooms have a light on each side of the bed, almost like bedside lamps! This wiring will need to be put in place when the first fix electrical is done. The electrical second fix is when all your light fittings and switches will be put in, for me this was done almost at the end of my build so it just bought everything together so nicely, kinda made everything come to life with the warm light colours!

I had my electrician wire up all of my cables and connections for my internet and my TV when he ran the wires for the Tiny House. It’s a good idea as it’ll avoid digging trenches more than once! Both the internet and TV connections were a little tricky given my location, but all doable! My internet is satellite, so a ground mounted pole had to be installed by the internet company and for the TV (Foxtel) a roof mounted dish! I don’t have “regular” TV but if chose to then an aerial installed in the right position is all I’d need!

Smoke alarms of course are mandatory and they’ll be something you’ll have to indicate on your council plans, your electrician will install them for you. And I opted to also have the electrician install a carbon monoxide detector given that I have a fireplace in a Tiny House!

The gadget by my front door is a small weather station! It’s nothing complicated and I didn’t really think I’d use it much but I do! Keeping a check on the inside and outside temperatures helps a bit to gauge when to put on the fire or air conditioner!

Hope that’s answered most of your questions about the electrics in my Tiny House!
